The Dumbbell Nebula M27 is a planetary nebula at a distance of about 1,360 light years. With the bright colors it is perhaps the finest planetary nebula in the sky, and was the first planetary nebula ever discovered by Charles Messier. With a narrowband filter and modern CCD equipment we can bring out the faint utter shell like structure shining in bright red colors. What more can you ask from a star late in life?
